Tung Shui @ Jalan Sisi

Bubur Cha Cha
Six Combination Soup (Liu Wei Tang)
Peanut Soup
炸五香-二人份 RM5.60
I would make an assumption that no one would actually say no to desserts aka tong shui if you are a Malaysian since Malaysia has so manyyyy types of dessert such as cendol and ais-kacang. Hence, Muarkaki would like to introduce you with another tea-time option again after vegetarian Rojak which is a typical Chinese dessert stall near Wetex Parade/Classic Hotel, Jalan Sisi.
I’m not sure when did this stall exist but what I remember is it was there ever since I was young and also I like to come here with my highschool friends whenever we done shopping at Wetex. This stall sells two types of food: Tong-shui and deep fried stuffs. There are various types of tong shui selection, such as mung bean desserts (aka dao suan), Liu Wei, Bubur Cha Cha, peanut paste and etc. (Please have a look at the menu provided below). Most of the time I will order dao suan because this is kinda different from any other tong shui I ever had and the sweetness is just nice. It is not something watery yet you can chew on every single piece of green bean. Fyi, this dao suan is totally different from green bean soup that you always have. You can really see the shape of cooked green bean. Besides, this dessert is served with fritters! You can get a different taste within the same dessert. My second favourite tong shui is the liu wei or so-called ‘leng ji kang’ in other places. However, what differentiate this liu wei from ‘leng ji kang ‘is it doesn’t contain quail egg. I like to have it hot instead of cold because I feel that ice cubes would dilute its original taste and I like to have it sweet :P You could also request for more ginkgo with additional charges.

The other signature of this stall is the deep fried items as per mentioned above. Yes, what kind of deep fried stuffs they have? There are fish ball, prawn cutlet, yam cake, tofu and fish cake.  You can either ‘mix and match’ by your ownself or you can straight away from the uncle boss that how many person eating or how much would you like to have (i.e RM 5/6/7 etc). What I usually do is just tell the uncle that I wanted to 2 people’s portion and hence, I would get the variety choices of all items :D Oh yes, its superb to eat all these deep fried food with the chili!! The uncle will usually give each person a small little of chili because he knows this would be the best way to eat the food with.
Since this stall is located at the corner of the carpark exit from Pelangi Hotel, it only has limited spot for dine-in customers. Hence, please take a little more patience to wait for the seat or you could always take the seats in front the stall. Most of the customers would choose to dabao back home and eat but PLEASE keep in mind that, don’t stop in front of the stall and wait. The car’s engine is pretty heaty and it would eventually affect customers who are sitting in front of the stall. Thanks for your consideration in advance!
This is definitely an authentic Chinese Tong-Shui place at your choice!

Rojak @ Sg. Abong

Rojak is one of the local delights in Malaysia. You could easily and simply find one Rojak stall in any parts of Malaysia. What’s the typical Rojak you can think of? Fruits with crushed peanuts, cuttlefish, bean curd puffs and shrimp paste? I don’t really like Rojak with fruits, well simply because I think fruits with shrimp paste tasted too sweet and it had a strong scent for me. I preferably like to go for Muar’s vegetarian Rojak.
You might wonder what means by vegetarian Rojak? It simpy means Rojak without shrimp paste. Don’t worry about the rojak without the particular sauce would be tasteless. Just give it a try for this Sg Abong’s Rojak.
Most of the Muarians are probably aware of this Rojak place, and their first impression would be: oh my god, isn’t it need to wait very long? Yes, you need to be patient for the wait. The business is really good on Weekends’ afternoon and it is clearly shown by the long queue of car parking along the drain and also 3-4 customers surrounding a bald man, patiently waiting for their food.
There’re several items that you could be found from the Rojak, ie: Pineapple, cucumber, yam bean (Google translate called it so, I named it as Mang Kwang), bean sprout, water spinach, crushed peanuts, fried breadstick (aka yaw zha kuay) and also bean curd puffs. This vegetarian Rojak still comes with a single type of fruit: pineapple, but the sweet & sour of it is just nice to cover up the sweetness of the black soy sauce. Oh yes, you can definitely choose to eat it with its original taste or even with the spicy sauce. If you always crave for something spicy, then you could tell the boss : “Add chilli”. He will then add 1-2 chilli padi(S) in your Rojak portion. My favourite rojak combination will be “All in except cucumber and yam bean”, sorry guys, I just don’t like the cucumber taste. Do not have the perception that this Vege Rojak would be tasteless or even not savoury enough for you. Definitely no. When you eat the bean sprout and water spinach with the full amount of sauce, you will feel sweet; this sweetness will eventually covered up by your pineapple. All flavours will nicely balanced off by fried breadstick (aka yaw zha kuay) and bean curd puff. Isn’t that a perfect combination? Perhaps cucumber and yam bean could have brought their unique taste to the Rojak, but that I don’t know. You shall explore it then.
If you love to look for varities and would get sick of just Rojak only, then you can order the fried veggie cutlets or fried rice flour rolls (zhu chang fen). Both items are pretty common at Muar and the taste do not deviate much from any other stalls. Nothing special on them. You will definitely thirsty after eating your Rojak and you have two solutions on your hand: Cincau or Ice Kacang. Both are very local and typical. You want Cincau to partially quench the thirst OR Ice Kacang to relieve the heat?
If you look for snacks to eat before dinner during a hot and sunny after, Rojak could be listed on your what-to-eat list then.

Fish Soup @ Jalan Salleh

Have you tried fish porridge, fish meehun or even fish kuey tiao before? Was it in any of the hawker centre?

I hardly order any soupy based fish dishes in the food court because I think meehun, kuey tiao or porridge aren't satisfied my appetite. You might ask how about fish soup with rice, then if I would preferably choose chicken rice or char siew rice instead because I kinda think that fish soup with rice is quite tasteless for me. Haha! Besides, I also thought that the price for these all fish-based dishes are eventually higher than other food. The price of RM5 is considered quite expensive for the lunch cost at Muar.

After crapping for so long, okay, back to the topic. Muarkaki went to the stall that only sells fish-soup based dishes. You can match your fish soup with 4 add-ons: kuey tiao, rice, porridge and meehun. You sure heard of the longest ever waiting traffic light? Yes, this stall is located before the particular traffic light which is along Jalan Salleh. Although it's small, it has been there for almost 30 years.
The boss and the boss lady open the stall since 930am. There are also a lot of dining tables provided for their customers. Since the parking space is really limited, most customers would rather just take away their food. Stt and I came here for lunch even though it was raining heavily. I ordered a fish meehun while stt ordered a fish porridge, and ya, we ordered two marinated tofu as well!

Bee Hoon Fish Soup
Fish Porridge
Stewed tofu

When I first saw the food, I was so excited and I almost want to eat it right away. But how possible was it? I can only start eating after a series of photo session. I felt like the soup wasn't hot and warm enough and I'm not sure whether is it because we missed the best opportunity to eat it due to photo session. Overall, the fish meehun was okay and the fish was really a lot with the price we paid. The soup has a lot of dong cai (eng name??) which is preferably used by Teow Chew residents. Too bad the portion of both dishes wasn't big and both of us were full at all. We almost thought of going to the next stall to have our second round! Stt had tried both fish porridge and fish soup with rice. She prefers fish soup with rice more because it carries more taste and much yummy! I also prefer my fish meehun because the fish porridge is abit tasteless for me. The marinated tofu was really good because the lady boss had put lots of effort in it.

Jalan Salleh
Oh yes, the most important fact is, these all fish porridge and fish meehun are cost only RM4!! Super cheap!
Jalan salleh could be a path that you will pass by everyday, but have u tried this before? If let say you are craving for it one day, come try this teoh chew homestyle's dishes ya!
