Kang Ji Bak Kut Teh @ Opposite Bomba

We paid a visit to a pretty significant and famous Bak Kut Teh shop this time. It was definitely well known by all local Muarians. This shop is more likely being recognized or introduced as the one opposite St. Andrew Church or the one nearby Bomba Station.
If you drop by this stall by Sunday or any other Public Holiday, then do expect to wait for some times for a table or even food. It could probably take about 15-20 minutes until your food is served. This is considered not too bad since the boss lady is always helped by her family members.
I have been to this Kang Ji Bak Kut Teh stall ever since I was young. I can still remember my parents will always pour the soup from the big claypot into a small plastic bowl for my siblings and I. When we grew up, this sort of tradition is no longer exists. We are asked to take the soup from the claypot. Overall, when you ever eat BKT outside of Muar, you tend to see people will pour the BKT soup into small bowls and eat from there. You can hardly see this in Muar. This is really depends on who you are having BKT with. If people are care about hygiene, then just go ahead with the small bowl concept and vice versa. I think anyway will do as long as you enjoy the food.
The BKT here contains lots of “ingredients” despite of pork ribs and pork belly. It has pork livers, pork intestines, mushroom, pork meatballs, etc. I remember it used to have Shitake mushroom and pork kidney, but they are gone and you cant find them in the soup anymore. You can have additional request, but of course that you need to pay extra for your request. You can also ask the boss lady to remove anything that you don’t eat from the soup (Eg, any internal part of Piggy)
However, this stall did not come with any lettuce, and it just simply lack of any kind of vegetables.
All BKT in Muar would always come with You Tiao and otak-otak. Most people would prefer to dip the You Tiao in the soup to soften it before eating. I personally prefer to eat the original You Tiao (without dipping into the soup lol). We had also introduced the otak-otak from this stall at our otak-otak post. I think otak-otak and BKT are really a perfect match!
Yam Rice
The yam rice here is just normal and nothing special about it. The yam’s scent is not fully absorbed into the rice. I more prefer the yam rice we introduced at previous Popeye BKT post because the rice there is more salty and more yummy. The BKT soup we just had today was normal. It wasn’t clear and some more Ms. Photographer took quite a while to take picture here and there, so the soup had turned slightly cold too.
A gentle reminder for all BKT eater: You are most likely thirsty after every single BKT meal, so what I could suggest is drink more tea!
If there’s one day you come to this stall with four other friends, I would recommend you to order 4 portions first. You can order more if it ain’t enough. Please don’t waste the food. Just tell the boss lady how many portions you needed and everything is counted per head count.

I ever mentioned to some Taiwanese that we Malaysian tend to have BKT as breakfast. They were surprised and wondering how and why we took this heavy breakfast. Oh well, BKT is always on our Malaysian breakfast list.

Popeye Bak Kut Teh

Bak Kut Teh (BKT) was first introduced to Malaya by Chinese workers of Hokkien origin and becomes popularly served in Malaysia and Singapore. The name literally translates as “Pork rib tea”, however it’s actually consists of meaty pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices.
Popeye BKT is definitely one of the most popular BKT places in Muar. They have around 20 tables thus queue is not common over here. Their service is usually fast (approximately 10-15 minutes). Popeye BKT  is one of the restaurant that serves BKT for dinner and supper. FYI, if you are a big fan of pig internal organs, meatballs or enoki mushroom, they do have a variety of choices which you can add on. Also, Popeye BKT serves a more herbal based soup compared to the peppery taste you could find elsewhere.

We had a big pot of Bak Kut Teh for 3. Soup was fantastic and  all the ingredients such as pork ribs, meatballs, lean meat, Tau Pok etc. have absorbed the goodness of the soup. I especially love to eat BKT in very traditional way with Yam RiceFried You Tiao together with my customized chili ( cili padi, dark soy sauce, soy cause, garlic)
It tasted good when it was still piping hot however after 10 minutes or so, we realized the soup was not as flavorful and it was lack of herbal taste (probably because I started to taste the ajinomoto!)
